Radio

  1. Yaesu FT-818ND (skookum all band, all mode mobile unit)
  2. AnyTone AT-D878UV+ (solid DMR ht with GPS APRS)
  3. Tidradio UV-5RTP (cheap 8W ht)

Current project

I’m building a radio kit from a Yaesu FT-818ND for emergency comms when I’m hiking. The idea is that a Raspberry Pi computer will control the radio over a sound card to transmit GPS APRS every couple of minutes. If I get into a pinch I can take advantage of the radio’s all band, all mode capabilities to get help. With what I’m looking at, the kit will weigh just shy of 3 lbs and run continuously for about 10 hours.
